Every sheet carries a calibration bar. Measure it before you use the printout — if it is not exactly 4 inches and 100 mm, your printer scaled the page.

Three spacings, two columns each

The PDF has a page for each of 32 mm, 1 inch and 1-1/4 inch spacing. Every page shows two hole columns — one at the 37 mm setback of the European 32 mm system, one 1-1/2 inches behind it — with a bold reference edge to register against the bottom of the panel.

Hole centres are marked with a circle and a cross so you can centre-punch precisely, and every fifth hole is labelled with its distance from the reference edge.

Print it at the right size — this is the whole game

Every sheet has a calibration bar at the bottom. Before you trust a printout, lay a real ruler across that bar. It must measure exactly 4 inches and exactly 100 mm. If it does not, the print was scaled and everything on the page is wrong by the same factor.

The usual culprit is a printer driver defaulting to “Fit to page” or “Shrink oversized pages”, which silently reduces the sheet by 2–6% to keep clear of the unprintable margin. In your print dialogue:

If the bar comes out consistently short by a fixed percentage, you can compensate by setting a custom scale — a bar measuring 3.9″ instead of 4″ means you printed at 97.5%, so reprint at 102.5%.

Using it

  1. Mark a reference edge on every panel — conventionally the bottom — and label it before you start. This is the step that decides whether your shelves sit level.
  2. Align the template’s bold reference line to that edge, every time, on every panel.
  3. Tape it down. A template that shifts halfway through is worse than no template.
  4. Centre-punch through each cross, then remove the paper and drill.
  5. Use a depth stop — 1/2 inch for a 5 mm pin. On a 3/4″ panel side you have only 1/4″ of margin before you come through the other face.
Drill both sides of a cabinet in one session. The most common failure is not inaccurate spacing but inconsistent registration — drilling the left panel from the bottom and the right panel from the top. A 1 mm mismatch between columns is visible as a tilted shelf.

5 mm (0.197″) and 3/16″ (0.188″) are close but not interchangeable — a 5 mm pin will not enter a 3/16″ hole. Pick one system and stay with it across the whole job.

Frequently asked questions

What spacing should shelf pin holes be?

32 mm (1.26 in) if you are using commercial European hardware, since almost all of it is dimensioned to that grid. For one-off shop cabinets, 1 in or 1-1/4 in works fine. Consistency between columns matters far more than which spacing you pick.

What drill bit for shelf pin holes?

5 mm for standard European pins, 1/4 in for the larger US style. Drill 1/2 in deep and always use a depth stop — a 3/4 in panel leaves only 1/4 in of margin before the bit breaks through the outside face.

How do I keep shelf pin holes aligned?

Register every column from the same reference edge — mark and label the bottom of each panel before you start, and always align the template to that. Drill both sides of a cabinet in the same session with the same setup.

How far from the front edge should the holes be?

The 32 mm system uses a 37 mm (about 1-7/16 in) setback from the front edge. For shop-built cabinets, 2 in from front and back is a common and forgiving choice.
