The 32 mm system

Most commercial cabinet hardware is built around the 32 mm system — shelf pin holes spaced 32 mm (1.26″) apart in a continuous vertical line, with a 37 mm setback from the front edge. Nearly every European hinge, drawer slide and shelf support is dimensioned to that grid.

32 mm or 1 inch? If you are using commercial hardware, jigs or line boring, use 32 mm. If you are building one-off shop cabinets with a shop-made jig, a 1″ or 1-1/4″ spacing is perfectly serviceable and easier to lay out in imperial. What matters far more is that all four columns match.

A 5 mm bit and a 3/16″ bit are close but not identical — 5 mm is 0.197″ and 3/16″ is 0.188″. A 5 mm pin in a 3/16″ hole will not go; a 3/16″ pin in a 5 mm hole is slightly loose but works. Pick one and stay with it.

Always use a depth stop. Drilling through the side of a cabinet is the classic shelf-pin mistake, and on a 3/4″ side with a 1/2″ hole you have only 1/4″ of margin.

Setback from the edges

The 32 mm system puts the front column 37 mm (about 1-7/16″) back from the front edge. For shop work, 2″ from front and back is a common and forgiving choice. What matters structurally is that the pins sit far enough in to be clear of the edge banding and far enough from the back to support the shelf against tipping.

Getting all four columns to line up

The whole job is registration. Every column must start at the same height from the same reference, or the shelf rocks.

  1. Mark a single reference edge on every panel — conventionally the bottom — and label it before you start.
  2. Always register the jig from that same edge, never from the top on one panel and the bottom on another.
  3. Drill both side panels of a cabinet as a pair, in the same session, with the same setup.
  4. Where a jig is shorter than the run, use the last hole drilled as the index pin for the next position rather than re-measuring.

An error of even 1 mm between the front and back columns produces a visibly tilted shelf.
