Every sheet carries a calibration bar. Measure it before you use the printout — if it is not exactly 4 inches and 100 mm, your printer scaled the page.

Print it at the right size — this is the whole game
The usual culprit is a printer driver defaulting to “Fit to page” or “Shrink oversized pages”, which silently reduces the sheet by 2–6% to keep clear of the unprintable margin. In your print dialogue:
- Set Scale to 100%, or choose Actual Size — not “Fit”.
- Turn off Shrink oversized pages if your reader offers it.
- Pick the paper size that matches the file you downloaded — Letter or A4, not the other one.
- Print from a PDF reader rather than a browser preview where you can. Browser print pipelines rescale more often.
If the bar comes out consistently short by a fixed percentage, you can compensate by setting a custom scale — a bar measuring 3.9″ instead of 4″ means you printed at 97.5%, so reprint at 102.5%.
Assembling it
- Cut along the outer border of each strip.
- Butt strip 2 up against the end of strip 1 — the numbering runs continuously, so the “7” at the end of strip 1 and the “7” at the start of strip 2 sit on top of each other.
- Tape on the back so the tape does not cover the graduations.
- Check the joined result against a real ruler across the seam before trusting it.
What it is good for — and what it is not
A paper tape is genuinely useful for one-off jobs where a real tape is not to hand, for measuring inside curves and around cylinders where a rigid rule will not follow, and for handing someone a disposable scale. It is not a replacement for a steel tape on anything structural: paper stretches with humidity, tears, and cannot be tensioned.
For anything where the measurement matters — framing, cabinetry, cutting material to length — use a steel tape and treat this as a backup.
Reading sixteenths quickly
Count from the nearest whole inch to the mark, in sixteenths, then reduce. Three marks past 5 inches is 5 and 3/16. Six marks is 6/16, which reduces to 3/8. Our fraction to decimal chart has every sixteenth and sixty-fourth in decimal and millimetres if you need to convert.
