Concrete strength by application

Concrete is specified by its 28-day compressive strength in pounds per square inch — the load a standard test cylinder withstands after curing four weeks. It is a single number that stands in for durability, abrasion resistance and freeze-thaw performance all at once.

Most ready-mix suppliers no longer produce below 3,000 psi for residential work. Bagged concrete mix is typically 4,000 psi at 28 days; bagged high-early mixes reach 5,000.

28 days is the reference, not the finish line. Concrete reaches roughly 70% of its rated strength in 7 days and continues gaining for years. It is safe to walk on in 24–48 hours and to drive on at about 7 days, but the number on the ticket is the 28-day figure.

What actually controls strength

The dominant variable is the water-to-cement ratio. Less water gives stronger concrete, and the relationship is steep — adding water on site to make a mix easier to place can cost 15–20% of the design strength.

If a mix is too stiff to place, the correct fix is a water-reducing admixture or a different slump specified at the plant — not a hose at the truck.

Air entrainment in freeze-thaw climates

Any exterior flatwork exposed to freezing needs air entrainment — microscopic bubbles that give freezing water somewhere to expand into. Typically 5–7% by volume. Without it, exterior concrete in a freeze-thaw climate scales and spalls within a few winters regardless of its strength.

Air entrainment costs some compressive strength — roughly 5% for each 1% of air — which is factored into the mix design. Do not specify air-entrained concrete for an interior slab you intend to power-trowel; the trowelling drives the air out of the surface and causes delamination.
